The Canon extenders have a nose that needs to be dealt with. Since you've got the camera and lens give it a try - carefully.
The f/8 image quality this combo delivered is impressive. 600mm f/8.0 1/640s ISO 400. Christmas Cactus Flower 2x. To get more magnification from the Canon EF 180mm f/3.5 L USM Lens, add a Canon EF 2x II or III Extender. The resulting 2x magnification is quite impressive. 360mm f/11.0 1/160s ISO 100.
Mode I corrects for all movements. Mode II compensates for panning shots. Stabilization works so well that I was able to handhold at 600mm at just 1/100s. I could even handhold and get sharp images while using the 2x teleconverter at 1200mm! Overall, the Sigma 150-600mm DG DN is a delight to use. Sigma 150-600mm DG DN — Autofocus performance

But have you thought of Sigma's or Tamron's 150-600 lenses? Compared to the 4.0/2xExtender combo you would get a similar or slightly better IQ but a much better aperture, AF and additional 200mm reach. I came to the conclusion that an 2x extender only makes sense in combination with Canon's 2.8 lens.
Save $100.00. PORTABILITY MEETS VERSATILITY The Sigma 150-600mm 5-6.3 DG HSM OS Contemporary was created around the concept of maximum portability meets utmost image quality in a variable aperture hyper-telephoto zoom lens. Shot at ISO 800 at 1/750 of a second, handheld, backlit, in The new 2X TC III works very well for me on the 500. Attached is a sample image from the 7D MK II using the Canon 500L f/4 II + Canon 2X TC III. Shot wide open @ f/8, uncropped. I have tons more from a trip to Arizona last week. The only restriction with the 2X TC III is the lack of autofocus on lenses slower than f/4.
Hey folks, considering the ef 800 f5.6 or the EF 600 F4with a 1.4 extender III. Does anyone know if autofocus with the 600 and extender would be slower than the EF 800? My camera is an R5. The 600 would be the version II Mr. If you haven't yet done it, you might want to try and find some physical examples of these lenses to try out.
Alternatives to the Sigma 150-600mm OS Contemporary Lens. The 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Lens was Sigma's prior entry into this lens class. Comparing the Sigma 150-600 Sports to the Sigma 150-500 OS shows the new lens having a very strong advantage at the long end. I would rather have any of the 150-600mm lenses over this earlier model.
On the excellent EF 500mm f/4L IS USM Lens, I love that lens, is good, not great, but passable. Sadly that said I use my Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports Lens 95% of the time when I need or use a telephoto. I do have the Sigma 1.4x tel-con for it which again is OK, good, not great, but passable. Go get the Canon 1.4x tel-con.

Agree with the others that the RF 1.4x is an excellent addition to the bag. It's very sharp and fast-focusing, even more capable than the 1.4x iii (on the 100-400ii). I've hardly had mine off the RF 100-500, it's that good (I do mostly birding). A couple of samples from the R5

If one compares the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 C to the much cheaper and older design EF 300mm f/4 + EF 2X III, the Sigma is clearly better. Here's the link to that comparison at The-Digital-Picture. The EF 300mm f/4 is also a non-stabilised lens, so proper stabilization using a tripod or monopod is even more critical in this case. 2wpB.
